Poets do not poet alone.
Poeting is community work –
an invitation into,
a relational practice
As Cortland Gilliam’s term as Chapel Hill Poet Laureate comes to an end, the Town of Chapel Hill extends our thanks for the kind, creative energy he has fostered over the past two years. Cortland contributed to a variety of Town programs and events throughout his term. He read original poems at our M.L.K. Day and Juneteenth celebrations, led a number of youth poetry workshops, and curated a recurring open mic series for Poetry Month at Chapel Hill Public Library, called The Poet is a Verb. Cortland has brought our community closer to poetry by helping us create accessible spaces for creative expression.
Join us in celebrating Cortland’s work as Chapel Hill Poet Laureate at this farewell event, featuring local poet and musician friends.
