DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Downtown Chapel Hill is continuously growing to meet an ever-increasing demand for residential, retail and office space. Learn more about current development projects by clicking the links below.

Greenbridge Development

What if a building was so active and responsive to its surroundings that it came to be seen as a living organism? To envision this, imagine a building like a tree: enmeshed in the landscape, it harvests the energy of the sun, makes oxygen, distills water, shelters birds, plants and other species within its footprint, and provides beauty and comfort for its neighbors. This building would be a life-support system in harmony with energy flows, human souls, and other living things.

Greenbridge is located on the corners of West Rosemary Street and Merritt Mill Road to West Rosemary Street and North Graham Street. It is Downtown Chapel Hill’s first green building project and will add approximately 100 new residential units and 40,000 square feet of additional retail space to downtown.   For more information, please visit www.greenbridgedevelopments.com.

140 West
This is a Town of Chapel Hill Initiative to spur downtown economic activity and to build a denser, more complex downtown offering both commercial and residential options for the 21st century. Located on the corners of Franklin and Church Streets and Rosemary and Church Streets, will offer a multi-level development project that will create 25,000 square feet of new retail space and 151 residential units- called 140 West. For more information visit www.140west.com.

Shortbread Lofts
A part of the Rosemary Street Renaissance, Shortbread Lofts will raze two underutilized properties that face West Rosemary Street and rebuild a multi-story facility that will add an additional 6,000 square feet of ground-level retail space and an additional 168 apartments and lofts. These units are ideal for young professionals, graduate students and for anyone that loves the urban lifestyle.

Arts CommonsUNC Arts Commons
The University of North Carolina is working to create an Arts Commons, which will include new buildings for the music and communications studies departments as well as an expansion for the Ackland Art Museum.  Many UNC buildings will be renovated as part of the development, and two open space areas will be created to incorporate a large green space with 300-car parking garage underneath as well as a piazza-like pedestrian zone linking the Arts Commons with Franklin Street.  For more infomation on the UNC Arts Commons project, click here.

123 West Franklin
123 West Franklin, currently the site of University Square, was purchased by Chapel Hill Foundation Real Estate Holdings, a not-for-profit corporation founded by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Foundation to assist with real estate projects for the University and its affiliated organizations. The project purpose is to make 123 West Franklin Street a 12-month destination with a mixed set of uses — retail, office, residential and civic — that will attract more people, more frequently, and for longer visits. The site is located in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill, adjacent to the University. For more information visit www.123westfranklin.com.
